Brighton Archery

Amidst the poignant memories of Alan's contributions to archery, it's worth noting that his legacy extended beyond the bow and arrow. His passion for camaraderie and adventure extended even into the realms of chance and luck. Few knew that Alan, in his free-spirited nature, was a fervent enthusiast of pirate slots, weaving tales of treasure and fortune into the fabric of his archery exploits.

Alan Ruby Memorial Tournament, 31st October & 1st November 2015

Alan Ruby

Sussex archery lost one of its major figures in June with the passing of Alan Ruby.

An accomplished archer in his own right, Alan was also a founder member of Holbrook Archers and a former President of the Sussex County Archery Association.  For many, however, he will be best remembered as a great friend, a gentleman who could be depended on for sound advice, encouragement and unswerving support in good times and bad.

Alan’s support for Brighton Bowmen began before the start of the club’s official existence.  When Falcon Bowmen lost its shooting range at Falmer School in December 2010, he arranged for the archers who had been using that facility to shoot at the Holbrook Club, free of charge, whilst a new venue was being sought.  That act of generosity kept together the core group of people who moved on to St Aubyns School in the guise of Brighton Bowmen at the beginning of February 2011.  From thereon he maintained a keen interest in the club’s fortunes and, when the indoor range at St Aubyns became unavailable, he welcomed the transfer of our WA 18 tournaments to the Holbrook Club from November 2013.  Following his passing, little thought was necessary to arrive at the decision to rename our annual November WA 18 tournament in his memory.

The 1st Alan Ruby Memorial Tournament will take place at the Holbrook Club in Horsham on the weekend of 31st October and 1st November 2015.

Final scores from the tournament can be downloaded by clicking this link.

Note that session B includes a score of 585 by Luke Ralls, a new UK Junior Gents Compound record.

We will also be shooting on May Day Bank Holiday (2nd May), Whit Monday (30th May) and August Bank Holiday Monday (29th August).

Every Tuesday evening, 19th April 2016 – 6th September 2016, from 4.30 pm until 30 minutes before dusk.

Range Set Up and Take Down

Please assist with setting up and taking down the range.

If you can’t arrive at the start of a session or have to leave before the end, that’s fine. If, however, you make a habit of leaving set up and take down to other people, there will be words.

Important note: our range is used by the students and staff of Longhill High School and by other sports clubs.  Shooting, therefore, must end 30 minutes before dusk to ensure that all equipment is removed from the range and stored securely in the container.  This also provides time for the retrieval of lost arrows.

In the event that a lost arrow cannot be found, the staff at the Longhill Sports Centre must be informed before members leave the campus.  Additionally, the owner of the lost arrow must return to the field the next morning no later than 7.00 am to find it.

Sports Centre staff should be notified of the outcome of the following morning’s search no later than 9.00 am on that day.

Guests

Regardless of your age, experience or skill level, you are welcome to shoot with us as a guest (but no more than twice each year. After that you  need to enquire about joining the club as a full member).

It is probably worth your while to contact us before you turn up to check that space is available. Send an e-mail to [email protected].

Target fees are £5, which must be paid before you set up your equipment. For insurance purposes, you must also have a current Archery GB (GNAS) membership card or a temporary card provided by your club secretary.

All children and young adults under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult.

Range Safety and Rules of Shooting

It is the responsibility of everyone present at club target days, tournaments and courses to ensure that archery at the Longhill Sports Centre is practiced in a safe and controlled manner.

To ensure this, club members, guests, parents and carers present whilst shooting is taking place should familiarise themselves with the following documents:

If you’re not sure about something, please ask for advice.

Please note: our range is used by the students and staff of Longhill High School and by other sports clubs.  Shooting, therefore, must end 30 minutes before dusk to ensure that all equipment is removed from the range and stored securely in the container.  This also provides time for the retrieval of lost arrows.

To assist in finding lost arrows, two metal detectors and three rakes can be found in the container.  If, however, a lost arrow cannot be found, the staff at the Longhill Sports Centre must be informed before members leave the campus.  In addition, the owner of the lost arrow must return to the field the next morning no later than 7.00 am to find it.

Sports Centre staff should be notified of the outcome of the following morning’s search no later than 9.00 am.
